LENTEN REGULATIONS FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE

In the United States, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.
All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence only.

Abstinence:

Law: All persons who are 14 or older are bound by the law of abstinence.
Explanation: A person is bound by the law of abstinence beginning on the day after their 14th birthday.
Application: The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat and foods prepared with meat or meat by-products.

Fast:

Law: All adults between the ages of 18 and 58 are bound by the law of fast.
Explanation: Adult are bound by the law of fast when their age falls between the day  after their 18th birthday and the day of their 59th birthday.
Application: The law of fast allows only one full meal and two lighter meals in the course of a day, and prohibits eating between meals.
Exceptions: Those who are pregnant or sick are not bound by the law of fast.
